Can someone tell me where to find information on the “natural behavior” of dogs?
Question by LdySha: Can someone tell me where to find information on the “natural behavior” of dogs?
I am wanting to read about dogs and their natural instincts. I’ve tried every search engine I can think of and rearranged the wording many times.. The results are always “how train your dog” or Ceaser’s website, etc.. I am just wanting to read about dogs and their natural behaviors, How they would behave if they were in “packs” or “undomesticated”.
Thanks all for any help you can provide..
O my goodness… Thank You All So Much! Your answers are exactly what I was looking for!

There’s this fantastic book I read a few years ago. It’s called “How To Speak Dog” and it compares the behavior and psychology of companion dogs with that of their wild counterparts.
It explains a lot of their pack hierarchy and body-language, etc.
As far as internet goes… take anything you read with a grain of salt!!

Perhaps the word you’re looking for is “feral”….referring to domestic dogs who have reverted back to wild behaviors?

You could also research the Dingo, the New Guinea Singing Dog, the Telomian, or the various indigenous pariah dogs of Africa, India and South America. They are not wolves, but wild dogs….Dingoes are the descendants of domesticated dogs brought to Australia by English settlers hundreds of years ago, so I’d think they’d be a perfect example of “natural” dog behavior.

maybe if you googled wild dogs or pack dogs?
My training techniques are “natural”… But I don’t quite agree with Cesar’s ways.
You must know and understand canine ecology and behaviour to understand Cesar. And to use him and his methods you must understand canines, right? I recommend reading a book called Of Wolves and Men by Barry Lopez, and any book by David L. Mech.
You’ll understand canine language in no time.
I have read several books by Stanley Coren, and thought they were all pretty good. They are about dogs and natural instincts. His latest is “Why does my dog act that way” It talks quite a lot about how dogs evolved and their natural instincts. He also wrote “How to speak dog”, “The intelligence of Dogs”, and many others.
Another book I really liked is called “Merle’s Door” by Ted Kerasote. It is the true story of a dog Merle. But it’s wrote in such a way that it is very informative and he describes a lot of dogs natural instincts.

Sorry I really don’t care much for Ceaser. Here are some of the reasons if your curious. But I won’t go into detail here because its off your topic.
